Beyond Birds and Bees for adoptive parents

“Where do babies come from?” “Do I have a birth dad?” Are you ready to answer those questions? If not, you do NOT want to miss Katie Malinski’s Beyond Birds and Bees workshop, held in conjunction with Adoption Knowledge Affiliates (AKA) specifically for Adoptive Parents!

Katie Malinski, LCSW is a fabulously fun therapist and parent coach, as well as the creator of Beyond Birds and Bees. From Everything a parent needs to teach health sexuality to their kids. It’s never too early to think about talking with your kids about sex — because the earlier you start, the easier – and more effective! – the conversation will be.

The workshop will cover:

  • Age Appropriate Sex Ed
  • Normal Sexual Behaviors, for birth to pre-adolescence
  • Red Flag Behaviors: when to worry and what to do
  • What’s an askable parent, and how to be one of them
  • Typical questions kids ask, and how to answer them.
  • This workshop is FUN! Come prepared with questions because there will be LOTS of Q&A.

So why a workshop specifically for adoptive parents? Adopted children may have different questions than their peers, or questions about sex earlier than their peers, due to their stories and experiences. Sometimes this complicates the “Birds and Bees” talk for families. This special workshop will allow you to connect with other adoptive parents who may have some of the same questions!

Check out for more information about Katie, the workshop, and to read reviews from past participants.

This workshop is open to ALL adoptive parents! You don’t have to be a member of AKA to attend! However, if you’d like to join AKA at the discounted rate of $40, you can register at the AKA member rate of $30. This is only $5 more than registering as a non-member (and the typical rate for this fun workshop).

Can’t wait to see you there!

3400 Kirby Lane, Austin, TX  78703

$30 AKA Member/$65 Non-Member

Join AKA at the discounted rate of $40 and attend the workshop at the member rate of $30!  $70 total!

Katie offers this workshop to the public for $65 so we are very excited to offer AKA members a steep discount!

How to Talk to Kids about the Hard Truths in Adoption

Sunday, February 24, 2013 – 1:00PM to 4:00PM (my office)
2525 Wallingwood, Bldg 1, Suite 213, Austin, TX, 78746

What do we say to our children when “She couldn’t take care of you” isn’t enough anymore, especially if the truth involves things like abandonment, substance abuse, rape, or serious criminal history?  How do we explain abstract social concepts like poverty or “one child” laws to young children when it’s hard for even adults to understand?  Robyn will offer examples and ideas about how to give our children age-appropriate and honest information about their life stories.  At the conclusion of this workshop, attendees will understand the why it’s important for children to know the truth about their life story.  Robyn will help parents and professionals develop the tools and language for discussing these difficult topics with children, while emphasizing the importance of attunement when sharing stories and supporting attachment.

Please follow this link to register. Online registration is quick and easy, with Early Bird discounts until February 15!

Beyond Consequences LIVE!
